Physical Theatre

Ages 6-12 years old

This workshop aims to introduce physical theatre concepts to children from 6 to 12 years, by developing their understanding of the way the human body communicates. The children will look at characterisation and breaking down of a story and a character by analysing the art of movement and how it is used in a performance. The workshop will encourage and develop in children creative problem solving skills, self-awareness and a healthy self-confidence. The workshop will include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Relaxation techniques
  • Body awareness - Learning how to think separately of different muscle groups and different body parts
  • Sense awareness
  • Concentration techniques
  • Introduction to Jacques Lecoq games / exercises / concepts – the concept of playfulness / togetherness / openness
  • Introduction to Vsevolod Meyerhold concepts - The link between word and movement
  • Developing observation, imitation, visualisation and the imagination
  • Practical use of Physical theatre in a creative piece - exploring characterisation and the basics of presenting live theatre
