English Learning Skills

This course will help primary school students (Years 4 & 5) with reading and writing they need every day at school, as well as equip them with skills necessary for NAPLAN annual tests, such as spelling, punctuation, grammar and critical literacy.

The course will cover the following areas:

  • Language conventions:
    • spelling
    • punctuation
    • syntax (word order in a sentence)
    • grammar
  • Writing skills:
    • writing a recount
    • writing a narrative
    • writing an information report
    • writing a description
    • expressing your opinion (exposition)
    • writing an explanation
    • writing 'pros and cons' (discussion)
    • writing a procedural text
    • writing for school research projects
  • Reading skills:
    • vocabulary
    • skimming (reading for the gist)
    • scanning (reading for details)
    • critical literacy
